Bush-Obama Education Plan

There is a bipartisan tradition to appoint to the post of Secretary of Education someone who has no experience teaching beyond a few college courses and believes the best way to improve education is to cut funding and get tough on teachers and their unions. Certainly Obama has continued this tradition. The only public comment Obama has made on education (not counting generalities and sound-bites) praised a principal for firing teachers. If we are serious about addressing declining educational standards then those with no educational experience or background have to stop blaming, micromanaging, and underfunding teachers. We cannot "win the future" as Obama says he wants by underfunding and disrespecting teachers.

Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is very dangerous to the elites - they will have no truck with anyone who points out that the Emperor has no clothes. I just bought Paul Street's new book, The Empire's New Clothes: Barack Obama and the Real World of Power. There are any number of books out there that outline what a truly progressive educational agenda would entail. The idea that Bush or Obama have a "progressive" educational plan is ludicrous. They have an educational plan that turns the brains of our youngsters into mush that can then be filled with propaganda.
