Joe Bageant

In reaction to John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008, I started a blog to sort out my thoughts about the political situation in this country. As time went on, I became more and more radicalized. Early on, I found the blog that Joe Bageant wrote and read quite a few of his rants. I got depressed and quit reading him. Then, I'd go back and read him again. He made more and more sense and I started to come to an understanding of how people could find anything to like about Sarah Palin. I've never read his books, Deer Hunting with Jesus: Dispatches From America's Class Wars or Rainbow Pie, but I think I should. In February, I learned that Joe Bageant had developed a very aggressive form of cancer. He died this past March 26th and I don't think many NPA members would disagree with anything that he wrote - visit to his website and find out for yourself. If you don't know of Joe, you'll be amazed when you read his powerful writings. He isn't called a "Redneck Revolutionary" for nothing (he was born in Winchester, Virginia) - he was an amazingly talented and brilliant writer whose life was cut way too short. Go to his blog and read what others have written about Joe since he died - he had a world-wide audience. Fittingly enough, his books were first published overseas, not in this country. That, in itself, says volumes about Joe.

Creating a Blog

Sondra,

Click on "Blog" in the menu bar at the top of the page and you will see, in tiny letters near the top of the page, "Create new blog entry". Click on that and you're in business!

He is missed.

Thanks for the post.

I have a hard time identifying with the victims.

If they can't figure out who the real villains are or think the bad guys are teachers and unions then we have a long way to go. Joe Bageant described a redneck culture with affection, but I cannot like or respect a culture that admires ignorance and stupidity and looks down on people who read. West Virginia has places that are as John Denver described "almost heaven." Blowing up mountains and destroying thousands of miles of streams is an inexcusable crime as anybody who has seen the pictures knows. Some local residents are real heroes in fighting this, but the majority vote for politicians to continue destroying the land and many threaten violence and death to those who object.

Andrew Harvey - a spiritual mystical kind of guy - said in his book "The Hope" that it has to get worse world wide so we give up our old ways before a transformation for the better can take place. I just wish we saw more action here as in the middle east or Europe.
