The Environment under the Democratic/Republican Uni-Party

Policy specifics reveal democrats and republicans have long followed the same course while ignoring dangers of a warming planet, a warming acidic ocean, and massive water shortages.

The democrats led a massive expansion of nuclear energy and opened up off shore drilling three times. Corn Ethanol and "clean coal" continue their renaissance. Mountain Top Removal continues unabated. US Sovereignty was handed over completely to BP for the oil spill resulting in long lasting damage which and a free pass for BP. See references 1, 71, 151, 166, 187, 199, 224, 244, 250, 269, 329, 371, 372, 373, 397, 405, 470, 471, 472, 473, 487, 553, 554, 555, 556, 593, 636, 637, 669, 670, 671, 672, 673, 674, 675, 676. DeChristopher, a whistle blower for an illegal sale of public lands to the fossil fuel industry, has been prosecuted and sentenced to two years by the Obama DOJ while everyone else who planned and executed the illegal action gets a pass. Also getting free passes was BP for the eleven who died at BPs Horizon and Massey Coal after 29 coal miners died because hundreds of safety violations were overlooked. Despite some small renewable energy investments such as a solar light for a bus station in Georgia, most of our tax money still goes to fossil fuels rather than renewable energy. Also getting passes are genetically-modified products by companies such as Monsanto which appear to be above the law. See references 50, 54, 478, 479, 480, 481, 482, 494, 513, 515, 516, 525, 540, 541, 595, 680, 681, 682, 691, 711. About 45% of the "environmental stimulus" went to tax breaks. This comes at a time when failure to adopt as other countries have already started to do - some for decades now - will have severe consequences due to both climate change and passing Peak Oil. (2)

Perhaps the biggest pass is tar sands oil, the XL Pipeline, and the great expansion of unsafe pipelines. Dr. James Hansen is correct in calling it "Game Over for Climate." See 536. See also references 7, 8, 11, 13, 18, 19, 24, 31, 47, 55, 57, 62, 138, 154, 165, 214, 304, 310, 319, 331, 335, 337, 338, 341, 381, 383, 384, 395, 427, 447, 457, 487, 501, 508, 510, 512, 530, 536, 538, 539, 543, 548, 549, 566, 567, 568, 569, 570, 571, 572, 573, 574, 577, 578, 586, 587, 588, 596, 597, 598, 605, 606, 640, 721, 722, 723, 724.

The White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, -which Obama completely controls - has weakened more than 80% of the rules proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency. This is worse than eight years of the Bush administration.(3)

Even when the EPA proposed minor actions to limit blowing up mountains and other environmental disasters, they all become effective in the distant future when they can be cancelled. The Tar Sands pipeline and delay of smog regulations recommended by Obama's own EPA stand out. Ignoring his own EPA recommendations on smog will cost - again according to his own EPA - 7,200 deaths 11,000 emergency room visits and 38,000 acute cases of asthma each year. See references 22, 23, 25, 35, 44, 45. And yet Obama prosecutes environmental whistleblowers more than any other Presidential Administration in the history of our Republic. (369) Contrast the drastic action and cost of 3,000 deaths one time in the terrorist attack in 2001 with the lack of any action for 7,200 yearly deaths.

Karl Moore points out,

Of all the environmental disaster we face, the biggest may be Obama's appointment of Ken Salazar as Secretary of the Interior. He voted against increased fuel efficiency standards for the U.S. automobile fleet - voted to end protection for offshore oil drilling off of Florida's coast - voted to allow the Army Corps of Engineers to ignore global warming impacts in their water development projects - voted against the repeal of tax breaks for Exxon-Mobil - voted to support subsidies to ranchers and other users of public forest and range lands - threatened to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service when its scientists determined the black-tailed prairie dog may be endangered - fought efforts to increase protection for endangered species and the environment in the Farm Bill, and is ending wolf protection in Wyoming.

Karl Moore also said,

When it comes to bioenergy, the stances of President Obama and Governor Romney are virtually the same. Both candidates have come together on an aggressively pro-biomass and biofuels platform that ignores the resulting increase in lung disease from particulate matter emissions, the contribution to runaway climate change, the watershed degradation, the forest destruction, and the disproportionate negative impacts on low income Americans and communities of color...This President's ABYSMAL record on environmental protections and consumer protections far exceeds that of ANY past President in my lifetime.

Climate change and its disastrous results already being felt are not a matter for controversy among the overwhelming majority of published credentialed scientists in the field. See references 10, 17, 32, 64, 78, 79, 81, 85, 88, 93, 94, 95, 102, 105, 107, 110, 113, 119, 122, 127, 128, 130, 144, 146, 152, 164, 170, 171, 172, 176, 177, 182, 185, 186, 204, 205, 206, 208, 209, 210, 221, 225, 228, 234, 246, 255, 272, 297, 311, 312, 317, 318, 322, 333, 335, 336, 343, 349, 357, 362, 368, 387, 391, 392, 394, 399, 400, 403, 413, 415, 417, 418, 419, 426, 440, 441, 442, 443, 444, 455, 460, 464, 465, 466, 467, 499, 502, 503, 505, 509, 511, 527, 532, 537, 550, 577, 578, 581, 592, 594, 600, 601, 634, 635, 650, 651, 652, 653, 654, 655, 656, 657, 658, 659, 660, 661, 662, 663, 664, 666, 667, 690, 707, 708, 709, 710.

In addition to a warming planet, a major risk often ignored is the stability of our oceans, sometimes called the basis for life. The oceans absorb heat and carbon dioxide which makes them warmer and more acidic. In addition to coral reefs, oysters, salmon, and fisheries, there is an alarming drop in plankton, the basis of other sea life and photosynthesis for oxygen both in the sea and over land. See references 28, 78, 84, 118, 119, 129, 142, 286, 409, 413, 486, 550, 628, 656, 657, 658, 706.

Standing out as a danger is the complete failure to protect our county's aquifiers which endangers our water supply. There is also a real question if there will be enough water left for drinking and farming after the fossil fuel and nuclear energy get top priority. See references 41, 46, 79, 114, 249, 261, 263, 268, 278, 279, 280, 281, 288, 303, 312, 317, 359, 364, 367, 370, 378, 381, 382, 400, 401, 411, 412, 413, 416, 436, 437, 438, 439, 456, 475, 488, 489, 490, 491, 492, 493, 521, 522, 523, 524, 545, 574, 575, 576, 607, 608, 609, 725, 726, 727, 728, 729, 730, 731, 732, 733.

The answer is not natural gas obtained by fracking - "in essence, explode a pipe bomb a few thousand feet beneath the surface, fracturing the surrounding rock." See reference 594. (Fracking is also used for uranium mining.) Unregulated by the EPA because of congressional action combined with the support of President Obama, companies refuse to even reveal the chemicals they are "fracking" with, nobody is monitoring the pollution to water and our aquifiers, and nobody is factoring the release of methane as a GHG. Of the 750 chemicals that can be used in the fracking process, more than 650 of them are toxic or carcinogens, according to a report filed with the U.S. House of Representatives in April 2011. See references 60, 63, 150, 183, 194, 220, 244, 280, 288, 296, 301, 303, 345, 355, 359, 370, 374, 375, 376, 377, 404, 410, 414, 434, 456, 475, 483, 521, 542, 543, 544, 594, 602, 639, 683, 684, 685, 686, 687, 688, 689, 712, 713, 715, 716, 717, 718.

Over half a century of experience throughout the world indicates nuclear energy is not the answer. It is the most expensive, the most delayed, and dangerous. It is also carbon intensive in uranium mining and processing where fracking is used just as for natural gas, building the nuclear plant, and transportation of uranium to and used radioactive waste from the nuclear plant. We do not have an agreed upon place to store or agreed way to transport nuclear waste. Fusion and thorium reactors have always been theoretical but "just around the corner" and every country in the world has backed away from breeder reactors. See references 65, 89, 103, 125, 126, 131, 223, 274, 344, 364, 378, 379, 380, 406, 407, 408, 412, 435, 436, 437, 438, 439, 484, 485, 519, 520, 558, 559, 560, 561, 562, 563, 564, 565, 582, 583, 584, 585, 603, 604, 692, 693, 694, 695, 696, 697, 698, 699, 700, 701, 702, 703, 704, 705, 719, 720.

There is a better way. Thirteen countries got more than 30 percent of their electricity from renewable energy in 2011, according to the Paris-based International Energy Agency. (Contrast that with the United States which only has 12.3 percent renewable energy, though some states do much better.) Some have over 50 percent, such as Sweden, Spain, and Canada. Iceland, Norway and other countries with far less resources than the United States have 100 percent. As renewable energy provides a bigger portion of the energy pie, costs go down. With fossil fuels, costs go up. We know this because it has been demonstrated repeatedly in countries which are wisely encouraging renewable energy and thus becoming more competitive than the United States. It is estimated that the world will spend an extra $8 trillion over the next 25 years to prolong the use of non-renewable resources, a cost that would be eliminated by eventually transitioning instead to 100% renewable energy. See references 132, 137, 141, 200, 230, 284, 295, 299, 300, 332, 337, 461, 496, 506, 514, 534, 546, 547, 551, 552, 557, 579, 580, 591, 599, 631, 632, 633, 642, 643, 644, 645, 646, 647, 648.

Should we blindly and meekly accept this and blindly support democrats because the alternative might be worse? Of course the republicans are no better, but - talk notwithstanding - the democratic record of doing nothing substantive is also clear.

In the references below I have documented how serious the problem is that both parties are ignoring. The point is not to get into a blame game. The point is this is a very serious matter for mankind that we need to address in a major way very soon. So far we have not. The overwhelming consensus of credentialed published scientists say the adverse consequences to future generations will be huge.
