THE PATH FORWARD FOR THE NEW YEAR

I want to share my thoughts about the path forward for the NPA and be open to enlightenment and comments about your thoughts.

The path forward should include continuing the work already in progress including sharing the Unified Progressive Platform with candidates for public office, maintaining the website, and communicating with Volunteers and other progressive organizations.

The opportunity for new goals is with the State Liaisons, but the goals need to be focused so as not to require too much volunteer time or overburden the Liaisons.

2013-2015 Candidates

In 2012 the New Progressive Alliance endorsed 54 candidates from 23 states. These candidates sought seats ranging from school boards to sheriff to U.S. Congress (both houses) to the presidency - THREE for that last office alone! - are blazing the trail for the future of democracy in America. It is a trail very different than that which the Democratic and Republican parties take us down election after election, with the same predictable result: A disenfranchised working class and an ever-more enriched military-industrial-Wall Street complex.

The Powerless Press Under the Democratic/Republican Uniparty

Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.
Thomas Jefferson

Unfortunately, this is the worst time for the media in the over two centuries since Thomas Jefferson wrote that memorable quote. The three reasons for this are corporate takeover of both the electronic and print media, lack of resources, and "He says, She says" journalism. Journalism as we used to know it no longer exists except in a few isolated and largely ignored places.

For a change of pace: This 1939 less than 9 minute animation has lost none of its power or relevance for today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8stkqssLYc

A Talk with a Minnesota Labor Leader

Talk by Alan L. Maki in Duluth, Minnesota; December 10, 2012.

Today marks another anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I have distributed copies to each of you compliments of the Canadian Labour Congress.

I am bringing to the proverbial public square some ideas I hope will gain widespread discussion.

Ideas based and formulated around the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights. We can only enforce these rights through movements.

A Modern Animated Fairy Tale by Ed Asner

An entertaining but accurate animated fairy tale of recent economics can be found here.

The Democratic Party Is Not Our Savior

Alan Maki is a Minnesota labor leader. When "The Nation” wrote an article, "How to Save the Democratic Party” below was his response. He also responded specifically to Congressman Keith Ellison.
Why would anyone want to save the Democratic Party when what we need is a new political party similar to Canada's New Democratic Party?
What a cast of characters writing here with most seeking a partnership in Wall Street's government rather than challenging Wall Street for political and economic power by building an anti-monopoly coalition party.

Where to in 2016?

Minnesota Labor Leader Alan Maki recently asked, “Has anyone else noticed all the feeble calls without any backbone or support to back them up coming from all the supporters of Obama and the Democrats to defend everything Obama now intends to cut? No allocation of resources to spur and initiate the required movements. Just a continuous drivel of platitudes and calls for phone calls and letters (of course always accompanied by requests for donations that will never be recorded or listened to by anyone in government.”

United Nations Millenium Development Goals

In 2000 the United Nations set up 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for the years 2000 to 2015 using 1990 as a baseline. (There are 21 targets and 60 indicators involved in these 8 MDGs.) They recently released a 72 page report on progress towards those goals as of June 2012.
